Imagine a Christmas unlike any other, where the traditional festivities will be replaced with the thrill of adventure and the awe-inspiring beauty of nature. On December 20th, 2023, a small group of intrepid travelers will embark on a remarkable journey up Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. Over the course of seven days, they will share moments of camaraderie, face challenges head-on, and celebrate Christmas in the shadow of this iconic mountain.
The adventure will begin in Moshi, Tanzania, where the group of eager climbers will gather. There will be an air of excitement as they meet their experienced guides, who will lead them on this incredible journey. They will receive a comprehensive briefing and last-minute gear checks before retiring to their cozy accommodations, ready to start the ascent the next morning.

The group will set out from Machame Gate, located at 1,800 meters above sea level. As they delve into the lush rainforest, the sound of exotic birds and the scent of vibrant foliage will surround them. The day's hike will bring them to Machame Camp at 3,000 meters, where their first night on the mountain will be marked by hearty meals and stories shared under the stars.

The trail will lead the group further into the mystical forest before emerging onto the Shira Plateau. The landscape will transform from dense vegetation to an otherworldly moonscape, dotted with giant lobelias and senecio plants. They will reach Shira Camp at 3,840 meters, captivated by the immensity of the mountain.

From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the "Shark's Tooth." Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft. We now continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 13,000ft. Here we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.
This day will be marked by a challenging ascent up the Barranco Wall, a thrilling scramble that will test their mettle. The reward will be the breathtaking view from the top. Barranco Camp at 3,950 meters will welcome them, and as the sun dips below the horizon, the group will share tales of their journey thus far.

As you leave Barranco Camp, you'll immediately notice the rugged beauty of the Barranco Wall rising dramatically before you. This steep, rocky formation, often called the "Breakfast Wall," is the first challenge of the day. Climbing the Barranco Wall requires some scrambling and the use of your hands, making it an exhilarating adventure. As you ascend, the views behind you offer a breathtaking panorama of the plains far below and the camps you've left behind.
Upon conquering the Barranco Wall, the trail levels out into the alpine desert. This unique landscape is characterized by low vegetation, volcanic rocks, and the iconic giant groundsels and lobelias that dot the terrain. The stark contrast between the stark, rocky environment and the lush, green Barranco Valley below is truly striking.
As you continue your hike, you'll traverse rolling hills and gentle slopes, occasionally ascending and descending. The path meanders through this otherworldly terrain, offering glimpses of Kibo's towering peak in the distance, which becomes a constant presence on your journey.
The Karanga Valley unfolds before you like a hidden oasis in this otherwise stark environment. The campsite is nestled in this sheltered valley, surrounded by a ring of volcanic rocks that provide protection from the elements. The air here is noticeably thinner, a reminder of the increasing altitude. The towering glaciers and snowfields of Kilimanjaro loom ever closer.
Upon arrival at Karanga Camp, you'll be greeted by your support team, who will have already set up tents and prepared a hot meal for you. The campsite's location, surrounded by the stunning Kilimanjaro scenery, makes it an ideal spot to rest and acclimatize before the final push to the summit.
As the sun sets over Kilimanjaro, you can reflect on the day's journey and look forward to the challenges and rewards that lie ahead. Christmas morning will be unlike any other. The group will awake before dawn and begin the arduous ascent to Uhuru Peak, the rooftop of Africa. The journey will be a test of their determination, but as they stand on the summit at 5,895 meters, the world below will seem insignificant. They will celebrate their Christmas on the highest point in Africa, a memory that will last a lifetime.

Descending from Mwaka Camp, the group will make their way back to Moshi, filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. They will bid farewell to their guides and the incredible mountain that has been their home for a week.
