8 Days Great Migration Crossing The Mara River

Trip Introduction

8 Days Great Migration Crossing Mara River is designed mainly to focus on the great migration in the northern part of the Serengeti National Park, the tour is best suited to run from August – October where you may have a chance to see the wildebeest crossing the Mara River in Masai Mara. The tour also visits Ngorongoro Crater, Olduvai Gorge, Lake Manyara National Park, and the central Serengeti for more adventure wildlife experience.

August through October, the migration heads north, out of the central Serengeti, splitting into two routes. The main group heads into the western corridor crossing the Grumeti River in spectacular stampedes. Enormous crocodiles wait patiently to snatch wildebeests as they surge across the river. The wildebeest continue to move steadily across the Grumeti region, making another perilous river crossing to cross the Mara River and reach the lush grazing in Kenya's Masai Mara.

Day 2: Arusha - Lake Manyara National Park

On this day your safari will start at 7:15 AM in the morning with your guide and drive to Lake Manyara National Park which takes about 2 hours. The park offers a mosaic of vegetation habitats that can sustain a high density of wildlife. It's a groundwater forest which acts like a giant filtering sponge that gradually releases water so it can flow gently into streams, instead of running off, prevents the soil from eroding.

From its high concentrations of animals such as elephant, buffalo, and antelopes to its dense forests of Trichilia, ficus, and Acacia species, the park is diverse with both wildlife and vegetation. With its location at the base of the East African rift valley along the Gregory rift, it offers spectacular viewing of the escarpment. Lake Manyara is one of those national parks which offer rich and diverse game viewing within a reasonably small area. It is one of the best areas for elephant viewing; the bird’s life here is also exceptional.

Dinner & Overnight at: Twiga Lodge

Day 3: Manyara - Serengeti National Park via Olduvai Gorge

Your safari will begin at 7:00 AM soon after having breakfast the journey begins heading to Serengeti National Park. On your way to Serengeti, you will stop at the Olduvai Gorge where the anthropologists Louis and Mary Leakey discover the theory that describes the origin of human life in Africa.

You will continue with a Game drive towards Serengeti and drive across kopje (rock outcropping) the place where lions like to stay, in the evening you will be taken to the camp for dinner & overnight stay.

Day 4: Central – Northern Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, we head towards the far northern reach of the Serengeti National Park, also known as the Wagakuria. We will do a game drive en-route from the Lobo area to the Wagakuria area. As we head north, good sightings of giraffe, plain game, herds of buffalo and elephants can often be seen.

We arrive in time for lunch at the camp and after lunch will we enjoy an afternoon game drive in the area. The wildebeest migration can normally be found in the Wagakuria area from August to October, depending on rainfall patterns. A long stretch of the Mara River runs through the northern Serengeti National Park and the Mara River provides the migration with its most difficult obstacle. Witnessing the frantic herds of wildebeest crossing the Mara River is an amazing experience.

Dinner & Overnight at: Tanzania Bush Camp - Northern

Day 5: Full Day Northern Serengeti Kogatende Area

After breakfast, enjoy a full day game drive in the Wagakuria area. Resident wildlife numbers are exceptionally high in this area of the park, with pride of lion up to 30 strong, however, from August to October the area turns into a wildlife paradise. The key feature is the Mara River and it is not uncommon to see the herds cross the Mara River north on one day and then back south a few days later. Please take note –Finding a crossing is very difficult and is sometimes a matter of luck. A herd can be seen next to the river and only decide to cross or not cross until a couple of days later. This area is a stunning region with kopjes, woodland, riverine vegetation and open plains, similar to Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve.
