Small Group Kilimanjaro Climbing
You certainly can’t climb Kilimanjaro in a day, but our day tour to this iconic, snow-capped mountain will give you an excellent taster of why Africa’s highest peak is so popular. During the course of the day, we will follow the popular Marangu Route and walk as far as the first hut – the Mandara – where our picnic lunch will be taken. As other trekkers continue upwards, bound for the summit, we will make the descent again and return to Moshi
After breakfast, you will be picked up, with packed lunch boxes in hand, and driven to Marangu Gate. At the gate, you will go through registration and pay park entry fees. From here you will start your 3-4 hours walk reaching the first hut, Mandara Hut, at an elevation of 2700m.
Along the way, you can admire the moss and lichens, vines, flowers, and spectacular orchids. You will visit the Maundi Crater and enjoy the breathtaking landscapes and picturesque view of Mount Kilimanjaro while you eat your delicious lunch. Your guide will then lead you back to Marangu Gate where the vehicle and driver will be there waiting to return you to your overnight hotel/lodge. This is where your safari will end.
When it comes down to it, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro requires only the ability to do long-distance hiking. Since there are no parts of the trail that require technical knowledge and experience, hikers are able to reach the summit following moderate inclines for the most part.
Training for your trek is highly-recommended, and depending on your current physical level, you can tailor specific exercises to address your weaknesses. Usually, training should begin 1-2 months prior to embarking on your climb. During that time, you should frequently be going on long-distance hikes, building up your strength until you believe you could handle 10 hours of continuous hiking.
When training, it is important to wear the hiking boots you plan on wearing during your trek, as that allows you to break into your boots and ensure they are the right size. Furthermore, hiking with your day pack will ease your adjustment once you’re on the mountain
In itself, long distance hiking isn’t the most difficult thing in the world. But paired with the high-altitude, lower oxygen levels, and fatigue, it can become a greater challenge. Performing aerobic activities can help improve your body’s efficiency in dealing with oxygen, thereby reducing your exposure to altitude sickness on the mountain.
